It was created in 2016 and officially registered in 2019 under Legal status of CSO, license No., 4214 with the aim of encouraging media to build democracy, prosperity, social stability, the rule of law, safeguarding human rights and fundamental freedom of speech in Ethiopia. The Ethiopian Media Council is an independent self-regulatory body/organization and registered by new media law proclamation 1238/21 of the country. Background: Ethiopian media landscape is opening since 2018. Generally, the capacity of the media sector in promoting professionalism and self-regulation is limited as there are no strong professional associations and the media council is only recently established.
